Eva passed away January 25, 2004. I received an email from Bob Fishman (son of Hyman and Esther), which I think puts many thoughts into words. This has been a tough year for the Fishman family, with the loss of Merry Short, Charles Briggs and Joshua Max Fishman and now Eva.

Dear all,
It is indeed sad, not only to lose another loved one, but to lose the "matriarch" of a generation. As I understand it, she came home from Connecticut, after her mother died to take care of the family. I know that Uncle Abie, Aunt Dora and Zadie (her father) were all at home. I think she never worked outside the home after that but instead dedicated her life to the family.

Who of my generation does not remember going to the house and her yelling down from upstairs, "Don't forget to wipe your feet". We each probably remember the cardboard box filled with empty containers of milk, oatmeal and assorted canned goods with which we played when we were there. I never went there when I was not offered food. Whenever Uncle Abie got up from sleeping and I was there he would always give me 25 or fifty cents. This was a family unit with no wife, no husband but with what seemed to be Love as the central point instead of a spouse.

The generation for which she stood as a model seems to be lost. I miss all of my departed family. I think of them often and am comforted by my thoughts that they shall "dwell in the house of the Lord forever".
