Many thanks to Baird Ferguson who contacted me recently. His great grandmother, Janet Wilson Reid was a first cousin to James Cross Reid. There is an asterick next to people in my direct line to make it easier to follow.
This lists my ancestors on James Cross Reid's side of the family. He came from Rutherglen, Scotland in the county of Lanark to America in 1881. I have a copy of his birth certificate . His mother was Marion Paterson Cross.
The Scottish held to a pretty stable pattern of naming children for themselves and their parents. Marion's parents were James Cross and Ann Dwyer. Her grandmother was Margaret Paterson. Scotland keeps excellent records, so I was able to trace her family back to John Auldcorn, born abt. 1699. I haven't given up the search yet, so this is just the beginning.
I received this email from a man in my Lanark Scotland email group that does a good job of explaining the naming patterns.........Naming Patterns.
My Scottish great grandfather named his son James Cross Reid, who named his son James Cross Reid (my uncle) who named his son James Cross Reid (my cousin) who named his son James Cross Reid. Unknowingly our family has continued the name of a man who was alive before America was a country.
Follow the links below to the present generation of Reids. I have placed an asterick next to the person who leads the direct line to the present,

Sudden death, on Saturday evening last, while a woman named Elizabeth Dunn, wife of a collier named Robert Reid, residing at 42 Burnhill Street, was sitting at tea with her family she suddenly complained of a pain in her side and fell down dead before anyone could support her. Doctor Gorman was at once sent for, but found life to be extinct. The cause of death is supposed to have been heart disease. Deceased was aged between 40 and 50 and had not been previously ailing.

* Notes from Baird Ferguson* on his great grandfather. He first appears in the 1851 census with his parents at Kittochside with his sister Margaret. He remained in the family home following the death of his mother and the subsequent remarriage of his father in 1867. despite the departure of his younger brother and sister to Rutherglen and the U.S.A. respectively. By 1871 the family had moved to Woodside Farm but by 1881 William had left the farm and moved in with his aunt Jean in King Street, Rutherglen. This may be the point in time to which his son, Alexander referred to when he stated that his father had been cheated of his inheritance of land in East Kilbride. On the 3rd June 1881 William married my great great grandmother, Janet Wilson Reid and they produced six children."
